Rabbi and scholar, Gross (1835-1910) received a traditional rabbinic education from Judah Aszod in Hungary, before moving to Germany to study with Leopold Zunz. For a time he was private tutor in the home of Baron Guenzberg in Paris. Gross’s lasting contribution to Jewish scholarship is his Gallia Judaica, a geographic dictionary of France according to rabbinic sources
