The Aleppo Codex dates to the early part of the Tenth-century. Tradition accredits Maimonides himself as considering the text authoritative. The manuscript was severely damaged following anti-Israel riots in Syria in 1948 and almost a third of it has been lost. The manuscript was smuggled out of Syria in 1956 and is presently preserved in Jerusalem
