Uncle of Sir Moses Montefiore, British-born Joshua Montefiore (1762-1843) was admitted to practice as a solicitor and sailed to Jamaica in 1787, however discriminatory precedent eventually resulted in his departure. Before settling in the United States, Montefiore participated in an unsuccessful expedition in 1792 to establish a British colony without slave labor, off the West Coast of Africa, near Sierra Leone. Settling in New York, his practice as a commercial lawyer led to compiling a number of useful guides of trade and legal practices. He ended his life as a gentleman-farmer near St. Albans, Vermont.
