Philosopher and economist of Portuguese-Jewish origin, Isaac de Pinto (1717-87) born in Bordeaux, lived most of his life in Holland. A deeply cultured Jew of the Enlightenment he used his combative pen to defend Jewish (- some have suggested, primarily Sephardic - ) honor. A profound political economist, his conservative positions led him to oppose popular democracy and thus the American Revolution, and defend the economic rights of the colonial powers, encouraging them to unite to maintain peace and social harmony.
