Moses Montefiore journeyed to Morocco in order to end the "Moroccan atrocities" of which Jews were tortured with "barbarous cruelty." In the present letter Sir Moses reports "the edict which I succeeded in obtaining in favor of our co-religionists is being promulgated in the dominions of the Sultan of Morocco...it is to be hoped that the governors of the provinces will...enforce the gracious decree of their sovereign. See D. Littman, Mission to Morocco (1863-1864) in: The Century of Moses Montefiore (1985) pp.171-229
