Getzel (or George) Selikovitch (1863? -1926) received a traditional Yeshivah education in Mir and Karlin, before entering the Sorbonne to study Egyptology and Oriental languages. In 1885 he accompanied the British army to the Sudan as an interpreter. In 1887 he immigrated to America, where he taught for a short while in the University of Pennsylvania before finding his métier in Yiddish journalism.
