Seals of this sort were often owned and used by Rabbis. For a similar example, see Barnett, no. 1194, pl. CCVI, p. 183. This seal, along with Lots 73 and 74, formerly belonged to Gustave Tuck (1857 - 1942), a prominent Londoner who assembled his collection of Judaica during the first half of the 19th cenutury under the guidance of the renowned art historian Cecil Roth. The collection was donated to the Jewish Historical Society of England (Tuck was their treasurer for over 35 years), and housed in the Mocatta Library at University College, London, which the collector rebuilt after its destruction during World War II. See J.H. Emden, Jews of Britain (ca.1943) p.128.
