The greatest Hebrew poet of modern times, Chaim Nachman Bialik (1873-1934) was also an essayist, storyteller, translator and editor. His writings exercised a profound influence on modern Jewish culture. An ardent zionist, he finally settled in Tel Aviv, Palestine in 1924. He sat for this portrait the year before he died in vienna, where he had gone for medical treatment. EJ, IV cols. 795-803.
