Several members of the North Italian Morpurgo family, were prominent in academic and business circles. Of particular note is the Rabbi and physician Samson Morpurgo (1681-1740), who served as Chief Rabbi of Ancona and was involved in the polemics of his generation against Nehemiah Chayun’s heretical writings. On his involvment in the controversy, see M. Benayahu, Haskamah Ureshut Bedefusei Venezia (1971) pp. 108-12; see also E. Carlebach, The Pursuit of Heresy (1990) pp.94-5. He was no doubt, the ancestral name-sake of the previous owner of this copy. See also E. Morpurgo, La Famiglia Morpurgo di Gradisca sull’Isonzo 1585-1855 (Padua, 1909)
