Struck makes good use of color. Apart from the fact that his subject wears Tephillin, ritually worn during morning prayers, the hint of blue with which Struck touches the man’s scull-cap and prayer-shawl, reflects the harsh morning light. The man covers his eyes perhaps chanting the fundamental “Shema Yisrael” prayer. An unusual medium for Hermann Struck, who earned his reputation as an engraver
