Odessa-born Isaac Fraenkel arrived in Eretz Israel for the first time in 1919. He left to become a student at the Academie des Beaux Arts in Paris. When he returned to Israel in 1926, there was already in existence a strong movement of the Paris Jewish modernist style which provided him with a broad field of activity. Fraenkel’s own style stressed unlimited color and freedom of expression as a purpose in itself and strove to create a mystic personal world of man and landscape. See: C. Roth, Jewish Art (1961) pp.915-16 and B. Tammuz, Art in Israel (1967) p.22
