The first volume contains an account of the unhappy Lopez Affair. Roderigo Lopez (1525-1594) was a Portuguese Marrano physician who settled in London. After serving the Earl of Leicester, he was appointed physician to Elizabeth I in 1586. Due to his political intrigues on the Continent, Lopez was falsely accused - and quickly executed, for plotting to poison the Queen. It is generally believed that Lopez was the prototype of Shylock in Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice. See JHSET, vols. VI, pp.32-55; XI pp.1-34; and XVI 163-84. The second volume contains references to Monezinos’ alleged discoveries in America and involvement of Menasseh ben Israel.
