One of the outstanding leaders of North African Jewry, who flourished in the first half of the eleventh century. This collection of folk-tales taken from early sources was designed to strengthen belief and faith, it is dedicated to the author’s father-in-law to console him in his mourning. It is probably the first prose storybook in medieval Hebrew literature and paved the way for Hebrew bellestristic literature as a literary genre. See M. Gaster, The Exampla of the Rabbis (1968); EJ, XII cols.1183-4
