give details and refs... In the construction of this portrait the artist provides a tantilizing sub-text to the personality of the sitter. Standing erect in a fine frock-coat grasping a silver-headed and tipped cane like the gentry of the day, suggests the Rabbi was a well to do and respectable man. In the Spartan background the only object the artist has chosen to feature is a table laden with volumes of the Talmud behind a drawn black drape. A clear sign that Judah Shimon Silberman was a dedicated Torah scholar worthy of being represented alongside his beloved Talmud alone
