In Jerusalem, it has long been customary to light the Hanukkah Lamp outdoors. In order to protect the flames and prevent fires, the use of a case was adopted. The case would be placed on a table or hung from a hook outside the home. Some families simply placed glass cups filled with oil inside the case; others used oil rows.
