On four ball feet, a rectangular box with lock; hinged lid. with gadrooned edge. Overall engraved with foliate pattern; lid engraved “Rabbi Moses Isaac Spektor.” Marked inside lid. H: 90mm. Lacking key.

This former sugar box was transformed into a Jewish ceremonial object. It was apparantly made for a relative of the illustrious Rabbi Isaac Elhanan Spektor (1817 - 1896), of Kovno, Lithuania. In addition to his Halachic reknown, was a proponent of Jewish migration to Palestine, he banned the importation of Ethrogim from Corfu, so as to stimulate their growth in the Holy Land.
