The First, and to date, the Only Hebrew Book Printed in Damascus. Members of the Aschkenazi family were Hebrew printers in Safed from 1577-87. In 1605 the Jewish Community of Safed came under severe attack from the Druze. The Aschkenazi family fled north to Damascus where they continued their printing tradition.
