A study of the remarkable Hebrew inscriptions found in El Transito, the impressive House of Worship in Toledo initially consecrated as a synagogue in 1360. Heydeck, a learned though somewhat mendacious convert from Judaism, had published in 1795 a study on the Jewish relics of Toledo. The present work by members of the Spanish Historical Academy proved Heydeck’s work to be spurious. For a revealing portrait of the intellectually audacious escapades of Heydeck in America, England and elsewhere, see C.Roth, Studies in Books and Booklore (1972) p.121-128
