Lot 354
AUSTRIAN SILVER SNUFF-BOX.
L: 95mm
Vienna, 1829
Est: $10,000 - $12,000
Inaugurated in 1826, Vienna’s famed Stadttempel was the city’s first legal synagogue since 1671. It’s traditional manner of prayer coupled with a reverential sense of decorum became a model for synagogues throughout the Austrian Empire. This fine silver snuff-box was doubtless presented to an honored member of the Congregation upon the establishment of the synagogue.
An aquatint with a similar interior view is in the Rubens Collection (no. 95). See also EJ, XVI col.124; and N. Vielmetti, 150 Jahre Stadttempel-Bilder und Dokumente in: Studia Judaica Austriaca vol. VI (1978)
