Jesurun was Haham of the Portuguese Community of Hamburg. The publication of this, his magnum opus, marks the dawn of a body of Jewish-Spanish literature produced in Germany. According to one estimate, the Sephardic Community of Hamburg numbered just 120 families the year this work was published.
