According to Zinberg, disclosure of morality books such as Chovoth Halevavoth to the masses created conflict between “the Rabbis and the People.” The books were seen to be “too holy and profound to be translated into Leshon Ashkenaz.” (pp. 220-23) -- UNUSED NOTE: Despite recent scholarly revelations concerning the likely indebtedness of the work to Sufi influence, Chovoth ha-Levavoth remains to this day a classic of Jewish Ethics.
