Detailed account of expenses including: “Coolies for removal of benches on Tisha’bab day…Washing Co. for washing Hazans white robe…Sweepers…Cocanut [sic] oil…” Among the officiants, most of whom sign for their salaries in Hebrew, one Gangaram Hamal leaves no more than a thumb-print. The Fort Synagogue, also known as Kneseth Eliyahu, was founded in 1888 and was the central Congregation of those Indian Jews who originated from Baghdad.
