This feat of scholarship was much admired by Moses Mendelssohn, who, upon publication of the first volume, did not hesitate to write a critical review praising Rabe’s accomplishments. Rabe, feeling no doubt duly grateful for the positive reception, returned the compliment and was the first to apply to Mendelssohn the popular saying “From Moses to Moses there was none like Moses” (Foreword, p.2). See A. Altmann, Moses Mendelssohn pp.196-97.
