R. Ya’akov Yisrael Kanievsky (1899-1985), the Steipler Gaon, was an eminent leader of Lithuanian Jewry in Eretz Israel. Allied with his brother-in-law the Chazon Ish, as well as R. Elazar Shach, R. Kanievsky rigorously focused on securing the primacy of Torah study in the newly established secular Jewish state, especially following the destruction of European Jewry in the Holocaust.
