Russian-born Oswald Rosenbaum (1840-88) rose to the rank of captain in the 123rd Ohio Infantry. He was first captured and imprisoned in Columbia, South Carolina from where he successfully escaped. He was again captured with much of his regiment at Winchester, Virginia on June 15, 1863 and was confined in the infamous Libby Prison in Richmond. The New York Times (6th November, 1863) specifically named Rosenbaum as a prisoner at Libby. After the war Rosenbaum lived in Sandusky, Ohio where he became assistant postmaster. See Simon Wolf, The American Jew as Patriot, Soldier and Citizen, p. 366 where Oswald Rosenbaum’s service is recorded (Wolf erroneously gave Rosenbaum's rank as sergeant).  . <<Fine image of an important Civil War Jewish Buckeye officer.>>
