R. Yoseph ben David was the son-in-law of R. Avraham Brody of Prague. His Chok Yoseph seems to have been primarily intended as an attack on R. Ya’akov Reischer’s Chok Ya’akov (Dessau, 1696), which also elaborates on the Laws of Passover. Among other points, R. Yoseph claimed that Chok Ya’akov did not express sufficient deference to previous authorities, such as Ta”Z and Ba”CH. Taking umbrage at the perceived slight, R. Reischer responded with the uncharacteristically fiery pamphlet ‘Lo Hibit Aven BeYa’akov’, found in the posthumously published third volume of his responsa, Shvuth Ya’akov.
