Mordechai ben David Strelisker (1809-75) was a moderate Orthodox Maskil. His mentors included Judah Jeitteles with whom he corresponded (Kerem Chemed II, 183) and SHI”R, in whose honor he composed a celebratory work marking his 70th birthday (Shirath HaKohen, HaMaggid 1860). The present work is a eulogy for Strelisker’s father, the famed Cantor David Strelisker of Brody and Pest. Notably, this was not the only eulogy he issued, having also prepared memorial works in honor of Zalman Marguiles (Za’akath Shever) and Emperor Francis I (Ta’anith Yeshurun). Listed by Vinograd as being the first Hebrew book published in Brody (probably based upon the afterword), it was actually issued in Lemberg as is evident from the second title page.
