Sighisoara (Schäsbrich / Shesburg, Romania): 14th January 1943

Est: $400 - $600
In 1941, the Romanian government began deporting Jews from the Bukovina and Bessarabia regions to Transnistria, a newly acquired territory, a result of allying with Germany in their invasion of the Soviet Union. The conditions in Transnistria were brutal. Relief efforts were spearheaded by the Council of Romanian Jewish Communities, yet between 1941-44, German and Romanian authorities murdered or caused the deaths of between 150,000 and 250,000 Romanian and Ukrainian Jews in Transnistria.
