Salonika born Daniel S. Zion (1883-1979) moved to Bulgaria as a religious functionary at at time when the country had very little Orthodox infrastructure. Due to his friendship with Metropolitan Stefan, the head of the Orthodox Church in Bulgaria, Zion was able to prevail upon King Boris III of Bulgaria to stand up to German pressure against Bulgaria’s Jews. In 1949, Zion and the majority of Bulgaria’s Jews moved to the newly formed State of Israel. There he continued to function as rabbi based in Jaffa, until his newly formed beliefs in Messianic Judaism had him stripped of his rabbinic title by Dayan Toledano.
