German-Jewish financier and philanthropist Baron Maurice de Hirsch (1831-96) made it his life’s work to improve the lot of oppressed East European Jewry. He was the founder of the Jewish Colonization Association, best known for efforts to resettle impoverished Russian Jews in new farming colonies in Argentina, the flagship settlement of which was Moisés Ville in the San Cristóbal Department, 400 miles north of Buenos Aires.
