Newfoundland was one of the earliest European settlements in North America. It is believed that the first Jewish settler was an English Jew engaged in the fur trade, who came to Newfoundland around 1800. During the first half of the 19th-century, additional Jewish families settled in Newfoundland, primarily in the region of St. John's.
