<<First edition of the first Hebrew lexicon printed in America.>> In the 16th century, Hebrew lexicons became important to Protestantism through its emphasis on Biblical study in the original languages. Pike’s Hebrew lexicon was first printed in England in 1766, leading to the printing of the first American edition at Harvard in 1802. Even more than Oxford or Cambridge, Harvard placed great emphasis on Hebrew.
