<<The first Jewish sermon preached in England and published in English.>> See J. Karp & A. Sutcliffe (Eds.) The Cambridge History of Judaism, Vol. 7, The Early Modern World, p. 430. <<Bound with:>> Four additional sermons (details provided upon request), all concerning the shock and grief occasioned by the Lisbon earthquake of 1755. In combination with subsequent fires and tidal waves, The Great Lisbon earthquake on the morning of Saturday, 1 November, 1755, almost totally destroyed Portugal’s capital. Estimates place the death toll in Lisbon and surrounding areas at between 30,000 and 50,000 people. The earthquake accentuated political tensions in Portugal, greatly disrupted the country's colonial ambitions and was widely discussed and dwelt upon by European Enlightenment philosophers. Isaac Nieto (1687-1773), succeeded his father David Nieto as Haham of the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue in London. See Hyamson, The Sephardim of England (1951) p.183; EJ, Vol. XII, col. 1153.
