R. Ezekiel Landau (1713-93), Chief Rabbi of Prague and head of its Yeshiva, is best known through this monumental work of responsa, one of the most authoritative sources in Halacha until today. Known after this work, the Noda BeYehudah was a devoted Rosh Yeshiva, a compassionate Rabbi, a strong community leader and a skillful negotiator with governments amidst the many wars and threatened expulsions that plagued the Jewish community of the time. Expressions of the novel challenges facing his community, such as Sabbateanism, Haskalah and Chassidism can be found in these very responsa.
