Aware of the strains that modernity was placing on traditional Jewish way of life, especially in Western countries such as America, the Chofetz Chaim penned this work in order to solidify the reader’s commitment to keeping the strictures of the Torah. Its 45 chapters address theological and practical aspects of basic Mitzvoth, such as learning Torah, marrying within the faith and keeping Kosher. Despite being best known for his Mishnah Berurah and Chofetz Chaim, R. Kagan authored many smaller topical works such as this one, addressing the pressing religious needs of late 19th century Ashkenazic Jewry.
