Chief Rabbi of Izmir, Turkey, Chaim Benveniste (1603-73) is distinguished for his commentary to the Shulchan Aruch, Kenesseth HaGedolah. The present work is a brief halachic study to the Passover Hagadah. The laws and customs gathered here were widely utilized in many later Hagadah editions. A widely respected figure, Chaim Benveniste’s early enthusiasm for Shabthai Tzvi gave a significant boost to the growing movement, although he later fully recanted his support. See Ya’akov Barnai, Hamarah shel Europa: Perakim Betoldot Hakehilah Hayehudit Be’Izmir Beme’ah Hashva-Esrei Vehashmonah Esrei (Jerusalem 2014).
