Baruch Schick of Shklov relates that he paid a visit to the “famous Chasid R. Eliyah in the month of Teveth 1778… I heard from the mouth of the holy man that in direct proportion to a man’s deficiency in the other wisdoms, he will be deficient one hundred times more so in the wisdom of Torah; for Torah and wisdom are bound together.” See David E. Fishman, Russia’s First Modern Jews: The Jews of Shklov (1995) p. 22, 37-40.
