Naftali Carlebach (1889-1967), scion of a prominent German rabbinic family, was rabbi of the Passaeurstrasse synagogue in Berlin from 1917 to 1931, and then served as Chief Rabbi of Baden near Vienna, Austria. Fleeing Nazi Europe in 1938, he came to the Upper West Side of Manhattan and there formed his own eponymous shul. His twin sons assisted him, one of whom (Reb Shlomo) achieved renown far beyond the walls of the synagogue.
