R. Salomon (Shlomo Zalman) Breuer (1850-1926) married Sophie, the youngest daughter of Rabbiner Samson Raphael Hirsch. After receiving Semichah from the Kesav Sofer in Pressburg, Salomon Breuer was appointed Rabbi of Papa, Hungary. In 1890 he succeeded his recently deceased father-in-law as the rabbi of Frankfurt’s Austrittsgemeinde (secessioned community), thus becoming in essence, the titular head of German Orthodoxy. Among his sons, Rabbi Yosef (1882-1980), would lead the Frankfurt community after him, later, facilitating its transition to Washington Heights, New York. Another son, Isaac (1883-1946), was an outspoken ideologue, who, upon moving to Jerusalem, served as the first president of the Poalei Agudath Yisroel. The author (1822-99), was Rabbi of Nanash, Hungary, and a prime disciple of the Chasam Sofer, the Yismach Moshe and R. Chaim Sanzer. Rabbi Salomon Breuer studied in Pressburg under the Kesav Sofer and was thus well acquainted with many of the disciples of the Chasam Sofer.
