The "Yanuka" was orphaned from his father R. Asher of Stolin in his early childhood, and appointed Rebbe at the age of five. He became the son-in-law of R. David Twersky of Zlatopol, but died at the age of 53 and was buried in Frankfurt; and hence is known among Karlin Chassidim as "The Frankfurter." He had six sons and four daughters, all but one perished in the Holocaust. The only survivor was his youngest son, R. Yochanan of Lutzk (and later of Detroit, 1900-56), the grandfather of the present Rebbe of Karlin-Stolin and of his brother, the Lutzk (Loitsk) Rebbe.
