Son of the first Rebbe of Chortkov, R. Duvid Moshe (1828–1903) and son-in-law of Rabbi Avraham Ya'akov of Sadigura (1820–83); each, the sons of R. Yisroel of Ruzhyn. Among the founders of Agudath Israel, he was a remarkable Chassidic leader with thousands of followers including many Torah giants such as Rabbi Meir Shapira of Lublin, and Rabbi Meir Arik of Tarnow. His court in Chortkov, Galicia, was destroyed during World War I and he relocated to Vienna.
