<<Accompanied by:>> Carl Laemmle. Two Typed Letters Signed, on letterhead of the Universal Pictures Corporation. Both written to Frederick Benario, one marked “strictly confidential.” In very direct language Laemmle informs Benario the degree to which he and his film company might assist “our unfortunate brethren.” Universal City, Calf. 28th April, 1933 and 6th May, 1933. Carl Laemmle (1867-1939) was a German-Jew who immigrated to the United States, where in later life as a film producer in Hollywood, he founded the studio that became Universal Pictures. He produced or worked on over 400 movies. Laemmle remained connected to his home town of Laupheim (Baden-Württemberg) throughout his life, and in the 1930’s financially sponsored hundreds of Jews in emigrating from Nazi Germany to the United States, thus saving them from the Holocaust.
