Although the Nazi occupation of Denmark began in the Spring of 1940, Denmark’s Jews lived in relative safety for the next three-and-a-half years. However in August 1943, when the Germans plans to deport Danish Jewry became known, the majority of the community was spirited away by boat to safety in neutral Sweden. Consequently, this religious calendar was produced for Jews in a country where each and every one had fled abroad. The deportations were set to take place on Rosh Hashanah of 1943, the first day that appears in this Luach. - 98% of Denmark’s Jews survived the Holocaust. A larger format version of this Luach was also issued, see Kestenbaum Sale 46, lot 145.
