“This little book is an attempt in all modesty to set down in words and pictures an account of what good and evil was characterisitic of daily life in Shanghai during the war year 1941-45.” (Foreword). <<Very scarce.>> A petite volume with witty cartoons depicting daily life in Japanese-occupied Shanghai during World War Two. A number of pages focus specifically on Jews and the ‘Shanghai Ghetto’ of Hongkau. Friedrich Schiff (1908-68) was born to a Jewish family in Austria who fled Nazi-dominated Europe finding safety in China where he worked as an illustrator and caricaturist with an instantly recognizable style and sense of humor. He later settled in Argentina.
