Congregation Shaar Hashomayim is an Ashkenazi Orthodox synagogue in Westmount, Quebec. Incorporated in 1846, it is the oldest traditional Ashkenazi synagogue in Canada and the largest traditional synagogue in Canada. This is the Order Of Service for the consecration of the New Synagogue on McGill College Avenue, Montreal, held on the 15th of September 1886. Seven senior members of the Congregation have customized Hebrew acrostic homiletic poems that appear on pages 18-19. These include Lazarus Cohen, the great-grandfather of the poet-singer <<Leonard (Eliezer) Cohen>> (1934-2016), whose family attended Congregation Shaar Hashomayim for four generations.
