Edgar Marx Lazarus (1838-84) was from an old Jewish family of Charleston, SC. After the Civil War he and his wife Rachel ‘Minnie’ Mordecai, who is listed as #1639 in the Lineage Book of the Daughters of the American Revolution (Washington, D.C., 1896), moved to Baltimore and became stalwarts of the Jewish community there. Major Edward Manigault (1816-1874) commanded the South Carolina Siege Train, stationed on James Island, defending Charleston from the Union Army.
