Born in Bayonne, France, and of Portuguese-Jewish descent, Henri Castro (1786-1865) was a Jewish empresario of the Republic of Texas. The recipient of two land grants in 1842, Castro had planned to create a settlement of 600 families. The project, which was renamed Castroville in this document, did not fully come to fruition, but it was established and is still known for its Alsatian-Texan architecture. See B.D. Weaver, Castro's Colony: Empresario Development in Texas, 1842-1865. (2006).
