Yos / Yas (Jassy, Iași, Rumania): c. 1890
Est: $3,000 - $5,000
Hebrew prayer for accompanying the dead to their grave, commencing: Hatzur tamim pa’alo ki chol derachav mishpat (“He is a Rock, His work is perfect” Deut. 32:4).
The town of Jassy figures prominently in Jewish history, with the first documented presence of Jews to arrive there in the late 16th century. By the mid-19th century the city was at least one-third Jewish. Jassy was the home of both the first-ever Yiddish-language newspaper (Koros Ha’itim) and the first-ever professional Yiddish theater.
According to the 1930 census, there were 127 synagogues in the town. Currently, Jassy has a Jewish population of some 300 and two operating synagogues, one of which, the 1671 Great Synagogue, is the oldest surviving synagogue in Romania.
