Born to a Jewish family in Bavaria, Levi Strauss (1829-1902) founded the iconic American company in 1853, but as a clothing and dry goods store only. The particular invention that made him famous, blue-jeans with copper riveted pockets, came in 1871. In American lore, Strauss is regarded as one of the pioneering builders of the American West.
