Sulzberger replies to an inquiry from Brann (1849-1920), a rabbi and historian in Breslau, who was conducting research into the Gratz family. Sulzberger provides here detailed and interesting genealogical information gleaned from 18th century correspondence between the American and European branches of the family. Sulzberger’s information was only obtainable in America and would have been virtually impossible for Brann to discover due to the vagaries of Jewish naming conventions in the 18th-century. For example, Sulzberger explains that Jechiel Gratz and Michael Gratz are the same person, and that a Reb Jonathan Strelitz is a brother of Michael and Bernard Gratz.
